EMPEY AS NEXT UUP LEADER?



To quote Paul Whitehouse in the Fast Show, "Me? In Charge of the UUP? With my reputation? Are they mad?" The noble knight Sir Reg is a hopeless choice to take over from Trimble. Yet he is being punted in the media as the successor in waiting. For a start his fingerprints are all over the policies Trimble has advocated. Secondly he is soggily pro-Agreement. Third, he has a charisma by-pass and fourth, his record when a Minister was risible. The UUP need to understand that it is not "the management" that needs changed, it is the policies followed by the management. Sure Trimble needs to go - but so does Nesbitt, McNarry, McGimpsey - the Vichy A List. It seems to me that the UUP need to suffer even greater electoral humiliation before the lessons sink home.
