The Friday Essay.

SEIZING DEFEAT FROM THE JAWS OF VICTORY.

It makes you sick.

I’m not just talking about the graphic nature of the war against terrorism all too apparent in recent acts of savagery perpetrated by the Jihadists against the forces of democracy.

I’m not just talking about the horror of a young American man beheaded in Iraq by gloating Al Qu’eda terrorists, a video proudly played on Jihadistan TV as if it were a greatest hit on MTV.

I’m not just talking about Palestinian terrorists stealing body parts of six murdered Israeli soldiers and then using them as bargaining chips.

No, I’m talking about WHY the grotesque actions of these Jihadists in Iraq and Gaza are almost invisible to the liberal media.

Is it their selfish desire to bring the Bush administration down at all costs that obscures their vision? Is it their self-loathing, their preening vanity that occludes their vision? Is it their innate moral equivocation? Why do they shy away from exposing the evil that faces our civilisation?

Here in Europe, the pro-Jihad media has taken the decapitation of Nick Berg in its stride, barely pausing to acknowledge the horror of the event before going on breathlessly to suggest that this demonstrates we have lost the war and that as “occupiers” we now need to cut and run and leave Iraq to the real professionals at the UN. And they’re not even joking!

At the same time, the media has barely even commented on the nightmare vista of Hamas killers gleefully retaining body parts of murdered IDF soldiers. Instead, all we hear is why there can never be peace whilst Israel insists on oppressing those poor Palestinians.

Let’s be clear on a few issues. The US and its coalition partners have won tremendous victories in Iraq and Afghanistan. They achieved these victories because of the excellent war planning that went into the campaigns, because of the skill and bravery of the men and women in our armed forces and last but not least because of the iron resolution of war leaders President Bush and Donald Rumsfeld.

These victories were won despite the rotten liberal media who opposed any response short of holding hands and singing Lennon’s “Imagine”. These victories were won despite the UN – the terrorist’s favourite international organisation.

But recent months have seen the liberal media launch a sustained attack on the Bush Administration. Running up to an election this cannot have come as a surprise! Regrettably, this liberal campaign to bring Bush down is showing some success but purely because of self-inflicted wounds.

The shameful decision for the US forces to withdraw from Fallujah sent a message that despite the rhetoric when it comes to the crunch, the US will shy away from head on confrontation with psycho Islam. The liberal media got the result they wanted, the Jihadists celebrated by dancing but everyone else lost out. Bush was seen to be weak, those of us who support the war were disappointed, out soldiers were demoralised by the retreat and Iraqis who suspect our resolve had their worst fears confirmed. That’s the way it works – give the liberals what they want and we all lose out.

In a similar vein, the decision to introduce UN Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi is equally disastrous. His every utterance is designed to imply that the UN will be running the show again and that the US should get the hell out of its “occupation” of Iraq. Of course Iraqis already know just how corrupt the UN is and so when they see the US State Dept openly cavorting with Brahimi, can we blame them for suspecting our motives?

If the Bush White House does not assert itself now, then there is every chance that defeat will be grasped from the jaws of victory. This is the moment for redoubling our efforts to use our unrivalled military strength to crush the Jihadists in Iraq, and to offer our unambiguous support to Israel when it comes to crushing them in Gaza. The more we prevaricate and apologise for trying to do that which we know is morally right, the more certain it becomes that wrong will prevail.
