According to Conor Sweeney in the Irish Independent, Bertie Ahern is banking on restoring his tarnished credibility (What credibility?) by getting a deal of the EU constitution. (or "tidying up exercise" if your name is Jack Straw) After his Party's disastrous performance last week, wee Bertie is looking to restore his reputation by coming up with a package that can win at least begrudging support from other EU leaders tomorrow. The choice of who will be the next president of the EU seems the only real deal-breaker. Bertie and his Euro pals want the ludicrous Belgium Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt but Tony's not keen. Isn't this pathetic - wrangling about a useless figurehead whilst all the matters of enduring constitutional substance are horse-traded away as if they had no meaning.
