Labouring Futility
Tony Blair's number one fan, Home Office Minister, Hazel Blears has decided to launch a series of 'weekend academies' to win wavering supporters back to the New Labour fold. As if the proselytising capabilities of this wretched government were not already proficient enough!! 'Student's' will have to brush up on Labour history, and submit homework-style presentations in an attempt to reconnect them to core Labour values.
I would have thought the term 'values' and 'New Labour' were mutually exclusive. No government in history has done more to shorn itself of values for the mastery of 'statecraft' than this one. Its values, such as they are, relate purely and simply to the acquisition and maintenance of power. One could argue that is the sole motivating factor of all governments, but the difference with New Labour is the degree of success in this achievement, the pliability of the British media (journalistic and televisual) in facilitating the above objective, and the terrible gullibility of the contemporary UK electorate.
I detest the continuation of Blair's grip on power. New Labour has absolutely no concept of the ingredients which define the historical continuance of essential 'Britishness' and has, in so many areas, sought to attenuate or even destroy those ingredients. Hence the laissez faire immigration policies, and the appalling devolution project which has turned a hitherto relatively cohesive nation into a quasi-federal state with the potential to fragment further. Blears' 'academies' are merely further examples of the latent insincerities and overriding spin pervading every aspect of Labour's 'modernising' project. I fear that by the time the Conservatives are returned to power, the Britian in which I grew up will have de facto ceased to exist.
