THE PEOPLE'S FRONT OF JUDEA.
Alright. I'm assuming ATW readers are all familiar with the classic Monty Python movie, "The Life of Brian."
So, in that movie, there is the wonderful sketch in which Reg (The John Cleese character) leader of the People's front of Judea, asks his mates a rhetorical question, "and what have they (the Romans) ever given us?"
After a pause, someone volunteers "The aquaduct".
Cleese begrudgingly acknowledges this. "And sanitation" chirps up someone else. Soon, the legion of benefits (pardon the pun) bestowed by the Romans are trotted out with gay abandon - as Cleese gets more and more angry.
Eventually, a by now seething Cleese demands, "OK Apart from sanitation, medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, the fresh water system and publice health - WHAT have the Romans ever done for us?" Classic.
Now then, with the United States being accused of every evil under the sun, I think we need to ask "So what have they (The Americans) ever given us?
"Electric light, motion pictures, the phonograph, alkaline battery, television, the laser, the VCR, the internet (NOT Al Gore!!) the computer, the discovery of DNA, atomic energy, mapping the human genome, jazz, rock and roll, skyscrapers, MRI, Air-conditioning, the Panama canal..."
Yeah, but apart from THAT ...????
Daniel Flynn has a more extensive take on this is his great book "Why the Left hates America." Well, I love America, warts and all.
