THE UN TO THE RESCUE...

Well, who can be surprised? After it's much trumpeted deadline has passed for the Sudanese Government to stop the genocide in Darfur...nothing much happens.

A new United Nations report says Sudan has not disarmed Arab militias or stopped attacks against civilians in the strife-torn Darfur region. The report for the UN Security Council merely note "some" progress and called for more foreign troops to go to Sudan. It did not mention or recommend any sanctions against Khartoum, as had been threatened in an earlier UN resolution. Up to 50,000 people have been killed in Darfur, following a campaign by Arab militias against black Africans.

Once again, we see how utterly useless the United Nations is. The US should pull the financial plug on this monstrosity and establish instead a voluntary coalition of exclusively democratic nations prepared to deal with situations like this. After Rwanda, after Iraq, one would have thought the UN would change tack, but it can't. It is institutionally inept and whilst thousands of poor unfortunates die in Darfur the BEST it can do is send in more observers to the massacres. Shocking.
