BERTIE AHERNS' SPIN DOCTOR JOINS PSNI...

It's just SO important to keep politics out of policing, don't you agree? I mean that's what Chris Patten worked so hard to acheive, isn't it?

That's why Sinead McSweeney, a former political associate of Bertie Ahern, has been appointed as press officer of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The appointment of the former Fianna Fail spin doctor, who is now a special adviser to Michael McDowell, the justice minister, to such a sensitive post has caused disquiet among unionists, apparently. But why? Isn't it natural that our brand news shiny PSNI should have a republican spin doctor as it's press officer? Good thing that David Trimble secured the Union when he signed up to Patten and the rest of the Provo-fest Belfast Agreement otherwise a cynic might vew this latest PSNI appointment as one more step on the road to a dea facto united Irish police service - perish the thought?
