BLAIR ADMITS LETTING THE IRA REMAIN ACTIVE.
Here's an interesting line from an article in today's Sunday Times on the topic of a new book on Ulster Unionist Leader David Trimble by Dean Godson. (Subscription)
The book describes Blair’s attempt to limit the damage after the IRA spy ring was uncovered at Stormont — a discovery that precipitated the collapse of the devolved government. Blair apparently made light of the episode, telling Trimble that the movement needed “to give their militants something to do”. Blair then adds: “They were managing a process of change and were still letting the IRA do a certain amount.”
A certain amount of spying, maiming, murdering, extortion, drug-dealing...
Also interesting to read that David Trimble much preferred Martin McGuinness to Gerry Adams. That must be such a comfort to the next-of-kin of those slaughtered in Londonderry by the IRA of which McGuinness was such a proud leader.
