Gerry's Irony
You can always depend on The Guardian to make heroes and martyrs out of Irish republicans. In Saturday's edition Sinn Fein 'President' (and IRA member), Gerry Adams, attempts to have the sickening mass of British 'do-gooders' reaching for their spotted handkerchiefs as he takes us through the panoply of alleged 'misdeeds' by the RUC and the Army. Gerry's texts on IRA scum generally lurch from panegyrical to pathos - and back again. In this ridiculous piece he would have us believe that one or two instances of, questionably, unorthodox practices of interrogation is indistinguishable from the random genocide and mutilation carried out by his balaclava-clad chums.
Any incidents of 'mistreatment' in Iraq are as rare as comparable examples in Ulster. How ironic that dear Gerry cries from the rooftops about the experiences of IRA terrorists, yet never elaborates on the disgusting, brutal campaign carried out by the same organisation he is still a member of. How ironic that he never seeks to mention Jean McConville, kidnapped, beaten and murdered for helping a wounded soldier; Paddy Gillespie, a Roman Catholic who was turned into a human bomb; and Lord Mountbatten, blown to pieces whilst on holiday off the coast of Co Sligo. If Gerry wishes to lecture us all about mistreatment, perhaps he would care to offer some opinions on these images. Then again, perhaps not.
