Discerning readers will remember that a key IRA demand was for the full-time RUC Reserve to be axed. This wish was enshrined in the Patten Report, and as time marches on, Government is gagging to give the killers want they deserve. Of course, the RUC is no more (Thanks, Mr. Trimble) but the PSNI Full-time Reserve is in the cross-hairs, and it will be axed. But how can our bureaucratics proceed with this IRA-generated folly - and still not annoy unionists too much? Aha..here's the answer; M ake them all redundant, then re-hire them as armed security guards! Brilliant, eh? Never mind the principle or the cost - it sure solves the problem.



The problem about appeasing the wishes of law-breakers is that you end up sacrificing the wishes of the law abiding. In Northern Ireland, that is not a problem.
