IRA Remarks 'Boring'

Unionists, hold your breath. The politicians you elected to stave off the possibility of entertaining IRA godfathers in the corridors of Stormont are about to commit one hell of a serious volte-face. How else could the response by prominent members of the DUP to the remarks by Gerry Adams be construed? Today, the party of which I was once a member is thinking the hitherto unthinkable: sacrificing the last remnants of principle in order to acquire the levers of power. If I was a member of the DUP today I would be tearing up my membership card in disgust!!

Adams' statement adds absolutely nothing new to what has gone before. Everytime a Brownshirt utters opinions on the future demise of the IRA there is always the same underlying caveat attached. It is such a shame the hacks of a compliant media fail to detect it. The caveat equates to a quid pro quo: the 'end of the IRA in exchange for a process of irreversible change'. For republicans, the term 'irreversible change' means the achievement of, or sustained progress towards, a 'united Ireland.' Of course Gerry can make favourable noises about the end of the IRA is these circumstances; the evil, foul, murdering scum would have achieved the very objective the IRA was established to obtain. If the power-hungry Turks of the DUP cannot see it, they are no more adept at tackling the onset of terrorism than the fools they were empowered to replace.
