TALKING IN THE DARK...

It seems to me that politics is frequently about giving the impression of progress whilst in reality none is being made. This seems particularly true of the political talks due to start this afternoon aimed at "kick-starting" devolution in Northern Ireland.

To even the most disinterested observer, it must be obvious that the Belfast Agreement template has come to it's final resting place - in the dirt. With the DUP now occupying pole position in local politics, and Sinn Fein/IRA having eclipsed the SDLP, the opportunity to continue along the Belfast Agreement route is gone. The pathetic attempts by Blair and Ahern to pretend that all will be well fools no-one. With the liklihood of a Westminster election next year, neither the DUP nor Sinn Fein/IRA will try to cut any deal. Therefore we can anticipate another year of "intensive talks" which wil lead nowhere. Oh to be a politician and to spend one's time doing NOTHING.
