Storm Before the Calm

You've got to hand it to the DUP, they really know how to sow the seeds of confusion in the electorate. After years of adhering to the principled stance of refusing to share power with terrorism, the party now blows hot and cold over the prospects of sitting comfortably with Gerry & Co. in a devolved executive. A few days ago some DUP gurus appeared to welcome Sinn Fein's latest offering of nothing; yesterday Peter Robinson poured scorn on the prospects of a speedy return to Stormont.

Nevertheless, when one reads between the lines of this DUP hard-talk, it is obvious the party is wedded to a process which will eventually see them ensconced in power with the apologists of armed terror. As Loyd Grossman might say: 'let's look at the evidence.' Democratic Unionist policy now states that 'any future settlement must have the support of a majority of Unionists as well as a majority of nationalists.' When translated, the DUP policy basically indicates that any settlement must continue to have the support of a majority of nationalists - i.e. the endorsement of insurrectionist republican fascism if taken in the context of current electoral preferences.

Furthermore, the DUP is steadfast in its collective pursuance of a devolved administration in Ulster. Given that HM Government has the overriding objective of ensuring Sinn Fein/IRA participation in any Stormont regime, it follows logically that Robinson et al will betray the tenets of true Unionism to satisfy their lust for power. I hate to say it, but it looks increasingly like the DUP will ape the political machinations of the Ulster Unionists in their quest to secure power over principle. They deserve equal punishment should they choose to do so.
