Scottish Salmond

Party members of the SNP have decided to resurrect the career of former leader, Alex Salmond, by re-conferring the mantle of leadership on him for a second time. The recent decline of the SNP as an electoral force has brought some gratification to we Unionists, but we must not forget that Salmond had some pretty impressive electoral successes on his watch and he will be eager to replicate them in forthcoming elections.

I must confess I don't hold the same aversion to Scottish separatism as I do for its Irish counterpart. Probably has something to do with the fact that the SNP, whatever its faults, didn't rely on - or profit - from genocide to advance its cause. Nevertheless, Scottish separatism has the power to be a potent force. I suppose we are fortunate that mainstream UK parties will not tolerate the advancement of nationalism in Scotland and Wales if they can possibly help it. I pray every night they will in future have the same take on the destructive powers of nationalism in Northern Ireland.
