It's good to hear that the police are showing some good judgement and closing down a nightclub which they believe was being used as a loyalist paramilitary drug distribution centre. Next up - how about the police closing down political parties used to front loyalist and republican paramilitaries?
THE RACE IS ON....IN NORTH DOWN.
Thanks to Slugger for the developing story about the battle for the anti-Agreement vote at the next General Election in North Down. It seems that the DUP are suggesting that my former colleague in matters politic, Bob McCartney, should stand aside for Peter Weir, their newly selected Westminster hopeful. The idea is that this will maximise the anti-Agreement vote and allow the DUP to take Ulster Unionist Sylvia Hermon's seat. However, is it that simple?
Are the DUP "Anti-Agreement" in the sense that McCartney is? Why should the electorate be deprived of choice merely to suit the political appetites of one Party? Is the most important objective here to oust Hermon? Should the older man not give way to younger blood? It will be interesting to see how this one works out. I see that a "spokesman" for McCartney has ruled out the notion of the UKUP Leader stepping aside. Mmmmm..
THE CONKER MENACE.
Thank god for our politically correct human rights caring culture. This story relates the tale of a headteacher who has bought safety goggles for his pupils to wear when they play conkers in the playground.
Shaun Halfpenny, of Cummersdale Primary School, in Carlisle, says he took the step to ensure pupils can carry on playing the traditional game. He invested in six pairs of industrial safety goggles and now pupils queue up at breaks to take turns to use them.
It seems this intrepid Headmaster was so desperately concerned about pupils blinding themselves through over-rigorous playing of conkers, that he felt such a bold initiative was required.
And there was me thinking that a more harmless game for kids to play than conkers would be hard to imagine. But Mr. Halfwit was quick to realise the peril. What next - the menace of Marbles????
IRISH HYPOCRISY.
I enjoyed reading this article by Henry McDonald in the Observer. He blows a hole in the outrageous conceit trailed across the media last week that Ireland, somehow, is a world player in political power play!
"Throughout last week, there were constant references on Irish radio and television to the two female prisoners the Islamist kidnappers want freed in return for Bigley. These 'ladies' actually happen to be two scientists who were crucial in building up the Baath dictatorship's chemical arsenal, some of which was used to gas thousands of Iranians and Kurds. If Higgins believes that the 'two female prisoners' (aka 'the chemical war criminals') should be released, then perhaps he ought first to take a trip to northern Iraq, specifically to Halabja in free Kurdistan. The Labour TD might care to explain to the survivors of the chemical attack that killed more than 5,000 men, women, children and babies why the women behind Saddam's chemical warfare programme ought to walk free without trial. "
A TANGLED WEB - SITE UPDATE.
I just wanted to say a quick word of thanks to all those who have visited the site over the month of September. We recorded our highest ever traffic figure - 50% up on the previous month. I also wanted to say how much I appreciate the politeness, courtesy and good humour shown by the overwhelming number of contributors to our many debates.
Andrew will be back on-line in the next few days - so you can expect some lively contributions and debate from my Tangled associate!

ETA TAKE A FALL.
Pleased to see the French police move against the Spanish terrorists ETA. It is reported that two of ETA's most senior figures -Mikel Albizu, known as Antza, and his partner, Maria Soledad Iparraguirre, were among at least 18 people detained in a swoop in south-western France. This is good news - ETA's demise may well be hastened by this security operation.
THE PERVERSION OF THE EGALITARIANS.
I note that "AT LEAST three of Britain’s leading universities have introduced schemes that favour state school students at the expense of applicants with better grades from the independent sector. The universities — Exeter, Warwick and Edinburgh — have responded to pressure from the government to hit targets aimed at increasing the proportion of state school entrants. "
This blatant social engineering goes by unremarked when it should be a source of outrage. Universities, dependent on Government for their incomes, have prostituted the noble concept of a meritocratic based education in favour of the radical egalitarianism pursued by Blair and the left. This will ensure that they become increasingly worthless academic dressed factories producing an endless stream of well qualified ignoramuses.
ADAMS, ARAFAT, NOW GHADAFFI....
The Bigley saga continues. This time Libyan tyrant Ghadaffi has volunteered to use his "contacts" to try and obtain the release of captured British worker Ken Bigley. Following Adams and Afarat's recent interventions, how long before Kim Jong II also pleads for his release? And what about Bin Laden - he must surely speak up in favour of the kidnappers showing mercy? Sickening.
